About

I connect the marketing systems a company already pays for, and then tell them what the numbers say.

Ben Bullock

I have spent 15 years in marketing analytics and strategy, most of it on the agency side, working the same problem from different angles: companies spending heavily on marketing without a reliable way to tell what it produced.

My day job is running analytics across a portfolio of B2B companies. That is where the shape of this practice comes from. When the same measurement problem arrives often enough, you stop treating each one as a mystery and start recognizing the category it belongs to, and what usually fixes it.

Switchboard Partners exists for the companies that portfolio does not reach. Smaller, without the budget an agency retainer assumes, and stuck with the same problem.

The systems I work in most: Google Analytics and Search Console, HubSpot, Google Ads, Meta, LinkedIn ads and pages, BigQuery, dbt, Data Studio, Excel and Google Sheets, which are still where more consequential decisions get made than anybody likes to admit. Numbers that live nowhere else get handled the same way, through a sheet that syncs into the warehouse.

Why this practice exists

The idea underneath this business is unglamorous. Most small and mid-sized companies already have the data. They have Google Analytics, a CRM, ad platforms, and a spreadsheet somebody maintains by hand. What they do not have is anybody who can connect those systems and then interpret what comes out the other side.

Enterprise consultancies solve that problem well and charge accordingly. At the small end it mostly goes unsolved, or gets solved badly by whoever is already selling the media.

The name comes from the same place. A switchboard is where separate signals get routed into one place and connected to wherever they need to go. That is the work, more or less exactly.

What you should know before hiring me

Switchboard Partners is new, and there is no reason to pretend otherwise. The company has no decade of history behind it. What it has is 15 years of my work, most of which happened somewhere else and under somebody else's name.

It is also small on purpose. Only a small number of engagements run at a time, because what you are paying for is senior attention and there is no honest way to give that to twelve clients at once. If I am at capacity I will tell you, rather than take the work and stretch.

And because taking on a one-person practice is a risk, the engagement is built so that you are not stuck with it: your cloud account, your repository, definitions written down, 30 days notice. The detail is on the services page, including what it costs to run once I am gone.

Based in Chicago, in Ravenswood. The work is remote, and clients are wherever the work is. If you run an agency, there is a separate way to work together.
